The Stanley: "The heart of downtown"

The Stanley Theater was recently declared the heart of downtown Utica. Some feel that this statement is true while others disagree and say that "if the Stanley Theater is in fact the heart of Utica then it is in great need for a head transplant." What do you think?

Considering that I've lived in Utica a solid 19 years and then some, I think that I have the credibility to comment on this. I can see where people can try and say that the Stanley is the heart of Utica. My argument is that when a persons heart stops beating, they usually..um die. Utica would still be the city it is with or with out the Stanley. In all honestly the Stanley barely effects my life unless I'm driving down Genessee during the Stanley World Series. I understand the whole concept of bringing money in and getting Utica economically moving but that doesn't define this city. I believe that the people do. The boilermaker is much more of a major organ than the Stanley. It brings the city together and everyone works together to host one of the biggest road races. Utica's one of the biggest refugee cities. That's a little more important than having a stage for the annual performance of SCROOGE in December. Aaron's currently yelling at me for writing so much so I'm gonna end my rant before it get's out of hand. Moral of the story UTICA DOESN'T SUCK..and wouldn't suck with out the Stanley.

I agree, the Stanley is definitely NOT the heart of Utica. If anything, i'd say that like Samm says it's the Boilermaker, or even the food. We have plenty of dishes that are originated or exclusive to this area, like Chicken Riggies, Half Moons, and let's not forget Utica Club. The Stanley is a nice play to go see a play or maybe see a ridiculously overpriced Stand-up performance by Jerry Seinfeld, but other than that i'm not really impressed. And i guess the Halloween party one of my friends had back in middle school at the Stanley was cool.

I have to disagree with you Sam. I'm pretty sure that an event cannot be the heart of this city or any city. I believe what the article was trying to say is that the Stanley Theatre, a local landmark known by all (everyone knows where the Stanley is), with it's very central location and the long history associated with it, really can be considered the heart of Utica. Also, since they have been trying to revitalize downtown Utica for some time, perhaps that was the agenda behind the article. They really want businesses to move back to that area and rebuild it.
